This course covers all the essentials of exercise stress testing: what it is, when to do it, and how to do it. Along the way we will discuss issues such as which mode of exercise to use (e.g., treadmill versus cycle ergometer), when it’s safe to continue and when to stop the test, how to deal with ECG artifacts, and how to describe test results.

Indications. A stress test, sometimes called a treadmill stress test or exercise test, is used to find out how well your heart functions during stress but only assesses the ECG during the test unlike stress echo (see Stress Echocardiography) which looks at the heart with ultrasound as well.

Exercise stress testing may also be referred to as exercise ECG or exercise tolerance test. What It All Means. Stress tests are an interpretive tool and no tool is perfect. ECG cardiac stress tests are not 100% accurate for diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD) and other heart problems. About 15% of time, they can give false positive results, indicating heart disease which is not really there. Stress echocardiogram: An echocardiogram (often called "echo") is a graphic outline of the heart's movement.

The authors address the most important uses of exercise ECG testing, including chest pain evaluation, determining functional capacity of cardiac patients as well as seemingly healthy people, and low-level postmyocardial infarction testing. A stress test is performed with the use of physiological monitoring (including ECG, B/P, heart rate, etc.) during and after the use of a cardiac stressor (exercise or drug). A physician monitors the patient’s response to the stress and makes a diagnostic determination. Non-invasive and simultaneous recording of gastrointestinal (GI) activity during stress induction is still an unexplored field.
